OLDER ADULTS

 

NOTE: Fees for students 55+ years of age are lower because of state support. All adults are welcome in these classes. The registration fees indicated are to cover the difference in cost of operating the class and the amount reimbursed by the state. Materials fees, where indicated, are payable to the instructor at the first class meeting.

 

FAMILY HISTORY

GENEALOGY: Intermediate

Class is designed for those who know the basic skills for researching ancestry and wish to expand their techniques. Analyze research problems, organize family materials into a permanent record and write family histories. Information on computer programs and Internet sites for genealogy will be shared. Field trips included. No class April 9.

CREATIVE WRITING

Liberate your imagination by giving it a voice! Whether you express yourself with poetry, short stories, dramatic scripts, narratives, autobiography or essays, this class will encourage you to share your thoughts, feelings and experiences with others. We will read our creations to each other and suggest ways to make our writing sharper, clearer and more dynamic.

POETRY

This popular class has been running for more than 30 years! We will read and discuss traditional and contemporary poetry including poems written by class members. Attention is given to metrics, verse forms, sound devices, imagery, diction, figurative language and other topics. Required textbooks are Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry, 2nd edition, ISBN 0393956369 (out of print but available online) and Waverley Writers, a collection of essays by local poets, $25, available in the Adult School office. This spring we will study the ways in which poets craft and revise their work to produce a particular effect for readers. One session will be devoted to the critique of poems written by members of the class. Class members are also encouraged to prepare a poem (original, or otherwise) for recitation on our last day of class.

TOTAL BRAIN FITNESS: A HOLISTIC APPROACH

Through a holistic approach, using individual and interactive activities, students will learn what they can do to achieve and maintain optimal brain health. Learn strategies for a healthy life style, and how to nurture your mind, body and spirit. Learn about some of the best books, software and web sites for brain fitness. Improve memory, concentration, focus and hand eye coordination. Develop a personal action plan for brain fitness. Susan K. Diamond, MSW, MS is the founder of Total Brain Fitness ( www.totalbrainfitness.com ). She is a gerontologist, social worker, educator, and recreation therapist with over 35 years of work experience in senior services and education. No class May 1 and May 22.

SENIOR FRIENDSHIP DAY

Seniors are invited to attend presentations on topics such as money management skills, the latest health news, the many free services available and activities such as crafts and exercise. For a catered lunch (donation: $2) sign in by 10:30 a.m. Lunch is followed by physical fitness/line dancing. Have fun and meet new friends! Co-sponsored by Avenidas and the City of Palo Alto Recreation Department.

TECHNOLOGY

All courses in this section are taught at Avenidas, 450 Bryant Street, Palo Alto. All students must register with Palo Alto Adult School—please call (650) 329-3752. If you are unable to attend the first class, please do not register this quarter. These classes are supported by state funding. The low fees provide only a small part of the funding to pay our dedicated teachers and keep Avenidas equipment up to date. The majority of the funding depends on student attendance. Please pre-register and attend regularly.

These classes are for students that are just starting out, need more practice with the basics or, would like to start at the beginning and fill in any gaps. Level 1 classes have a slower pace then level 2 and 3 classes.

These are classes for people who feel comfortable with the basic operation of the computer and would like to learn more at a moderate level of detail.

These classes are for people who are comfortable with the basics and may have some experience in one or more applications like Microsoft WORD or using the Internet. These   classes go into detail on a particular application program.

GETTING FAMILIAR WITH YOUR COMPUTER

Recommended for computer users with little or no experience

A level 1 class. This is a class for beginning computer users with no experience or those who have some experience and would like to fill in the gaps. The class will cover the basics of Windows XP, creating files and folders, and some editing. The class will also provide an introduction to using the Internet for surfing the web and web-based email. For PC users only.

LOST IN CYBERSPACE?

A level 2 class. In this class you will learn about the Internet including surfing the Web, use of email and how to find interesting and informative websites. You will also learn to search for information on the Internet, determine what is safe and identify sites that can help you with travel, shopping, and medical research. For PC users only.

BASIC SKILLS USED IN MICROSOFT WORD

Prerequisites: Successful completion of level 1 and 2 classes or equivalent. Students should have some experience with Microsoft Word.

A level 3 class. In this class you will explore the many aspects of word processing applications. We will use Microsoft Word 2003. The skills covered include formatting, inserting special symbols and working with the layout of text. The use of pictures with the text, WordArt, clip art, and graphic objects will also be part of the course. Skills in using Microsoft Word are basic to all applications. Managing files and folders will also be covered. This class is suitable for owners of both Word 2000 and later versions and is for PC owners only.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY USING PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS

Prerequisites: Access to a digital camera and successful completion of levels 1 and 2 classes or equivalent

A level 3 class. Get started in the exciting world of digital photography! After this class you will be able to organize your photos and improve their composition and quality using tools provided by Photoshop Elements. You will also be introduced to layers and techniques for photo touchup. Also, you will learn how to prepare your photos in order to email them and make your photos ready for printing and sharing photos over the Internet. Bring your digital camera to the first class.

ADVANCED TOPICS IN MICROSOFT WORD

Prerequisite: Successful completion of level 1 and 2 classes or equivalent and basic Microsoft Word skills (such as taught in the class Basic Skills Used in Microsoft Word)

A level 3 class. Microsoft Word is the application to use for making large documents such as memoirs. This course teaches you how to make the most of additional Microsoft Word features. Do you know how to use styles and sections? Can you make a table of contents or an index? Do you know how to insert footnotes, pictures and more? Other topics covered include using Word with other Microsoft Office applications, and special topics such as Mail Merge.

FREE FOR THE TAKING

Prerequisites: Successful completion of levels 1 and 2 classes or equivalent

A level 3 class. There is a lot of very useful and reliable software that is available for free. In this class you will learn where to find quality and safe freeware programs. By the end of the course you will be able to download and install the programs, and un-install them if they turn out not to be of use to you. You will learn how to use Windows System Restore in case something goes wrong. You will also learn how to use some of the best software in class. We will pick a few favorite freeware programs, install them, learn to use them and then un-install them. Freeware programs will be identified and discussed in areas such as: browsers and the Web, desktop enhancement programs, photo and image software, and managing your PC.

COMPUTERS: MAC

GETTING FAMILIAR WITH YOUR MAC

Recommended for new OS X Macintosh users and those who need a refresher course

A level 1 class. This is a class for beginning Mac computer users and is appropriate for any version of OS X, except OS 10.5 (Leopard). After this class you will be able to use startup and shutdown techniques, navigate the Mac file system using Finder, and navigate the World Wide Web using Safari. The class will also cover the basics of Mac computer hardware including various plugs and peripherals such as iPods, digital cameras, printers, flash drives, etc. You are welcome to bring your own portable Mac computer to use in class or use our Mac lab computers.

MEET THE MAC: LEVEL 2 (ALL VERSIONS OF OS X)

Prerequisite: Getting Familiar with Your Mac or equivalent

A level 2 class. We will review how to use Mac OS X versions X.2, X.3 and X.4 including word processing and some graphics. You will learn more advanced features of OS X including System Preferences, an overview of iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie and iDVD; Apple’s .Mac (“dot-mac”) services; iCal; Address Book; and basic Internet using Apple’s Safari browser, Mail and iChatAV. The course will also cover basic troubleshooting techniques and programs. For Mac users only.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY ON THE MAC

CONNECT TO THE WORLD: INTERNET AND EMAIL

A level 2 class. Search the Web for information, share favorite websites, check the weather, and print maps. Get a free email address and start sending and receiving mail. Organize your mail with folders and use Help. Create an Address Book and Categories to easily send a message to one person or a group. View and send a picture as an attachment to messages and send free e-greeting cards. You are welcome to bring your own portable Mac computer to use in class or use our Mac lab computers.

iPHOTO, iTUNES AND iCHAT—AN INTRODUCTION

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Meet the Mac level I or equivalent

A level 2 class. It’s time to get creative, be entertained, and make voice or videophone calls using your Mac! Use iPhoto to store, organize, and do simple editing of your digital photos. View your photos in a slide show with music and share them with others. Organize and listen to your music using iTunes. Learn how to download music, a podcast of a radio program, and audiobooks in iTunes; transfer them to your iPod (or other player); and listen anytime, anywhere. Discover TV shows and movies for sale and listen to Internet radio stations. Make free calls to anywhere (even internationally) using iChat and the Internet and see others if they have a web camera. You are welcome to bring your own portable Mac computer to use in class or use our Mac lab computers. (Bringing a digital camera and music player with their cables to class is helpful but not necessary.)
