JAZZ PIANISTS AND VOCALISTS

A unique survey jazz course will focus on jazz pianists and vocalists. Samplings of recordings featuring more than a dozen noted jazz stylists will include the likes of Mose Allison, Nat “King” Cole, Bob Dorough, Dena DeRose, Fats Waller, Tom Lellis, Blossom Dearie, Bobby Troup, Shirley Horn, Andy Bey, Freddie Cole, Diana Krall, Dave Frishberg, Diane Schuur and Roy Kral. The rich variety of distinctive integrative keyboard/vocal blends stretch from the ’30s to current times. Dr. Wong’s personal experiences are shared in this one-time-only, learner-friendly class aimed at casual and seasoned jazz fans. Our guest clinician will be pianist Larry Dunlap.

Learn to read piano music including sight-reading, chords, transitions, jazz rhythms and classical music using an electronic keyboard. Students should have piano for practice between classes. If level you register for is not appropriate, instructor will change you to another level.

SYMPHONIC BAND

A fully instrumental band for experienced players of wind and mallet-rhythm percussion who enjoy playing traditional, popular and classical music. A concert is given at the end of each quarter (Sundays, June 8 and August 17, 2008). Applicants must call the band instructor at (650) 873-0671 before attending the first band practice. No class May 26.
