GREEN INTERIOR DESIGN -- THE NUTS AND BOLTS

You love to create a beautiful home, but you worry whether the paints, furniture and flooring you choose are healthy for you and the environment. It's time to look into green interior design, a new approach to home decorating that reflects your great taste and your care for the planet. This two-night course covers the environmental issues that are associated with common interior materials and furnishings. In this class you will see and touch building materials and fabrics that are as gorgeous as they are green, and you'll leave the class with a solid understanding of how to select materials for home interiors and the theory behind green building. Your instructor, Kirsten Flynn, owns the design firm Sustainable Home and specializes in environmentally responsible interiors. She teaches on the Peninsula and recently designed the interiors for a house featured in the Solar Decathlon, an international solar home contest.

FLORAL DESIGN WITH IKEBANA

Learn Wafu Ikebana composition, cutting techniques, use of pin frogs and containers, the five basic patterns, how to preserve cut plant materials and how to display your arrangements. For practice during the first class, bring sturdy gardening scissors, a low-edge dish and a "pin frog." Information will be given regarding what and where to buy ikebana equipment. A $40 flower materials fee is payable to the instructor, who has 18 years of training in Wafu Ikebana with numerous exhibitions in the Bay Area.

GARDEN DESIGN FOR HOMEOWNERS

Make your garden plans before the spring planting season! This class will give you the background to look at your land through new eyes, measure it properly, draw a base plan, develop an attractive and functional layout, and choose appropriate plants and materials. A Saturday field trip reinforces design concepts and plant selection criteria. The instructor and the class will provide feedback on each participant's plan. Required text: The Sunset Western Garden Book (2007 edition). A list of useful tools and supplies for a drafting will be provided at the first class. No class January 20 and January 27.

GARDENING

Get the jump on spring! Winter is the time for disease prevention, soil building, pruning and dormant spraying. This quarter covers natural and low-toxic sprays and techniques for healthy gardens, including vegetable plantings. Beginning and experienced gardeners will enjoy learning methods that are environmentally as well as user friendly. Ms. Bohan has 30 years experience as a professional gardener and 10 years experience teaching this class for zones 15, 16 and 17.

SUSTAINABLE VEGETABLE GARDENING

Instructors: UCCE Master Gardeners, Santa Clara County

Gardening year round is easy and rewarding in our mild Mediterranean climate. Learn how to have a successful, environmentally responsible food garden that provides delicious vegetables and herbs every month of the year. This course will stress sustainable gardening practices such as mulching, efficient watering methods, on-site composting, integrated pest management and use of organic fertilizers and soil amendments. Topics will include: soil preparation, amendments and fertilizers; irrigation methods and systems; working with both seeds and seedlings; cultural requirements of specific warm and cool season crops and varieties that do well in our area; and how to identify and manage common pests, weeds and diseases of vegetable crops in Santa Clara County. Instructors are Master Gardeners, a University of California Cooperative Extension volunteer program dedicated to providing research-based gardening information to home gardeners. Please note: class does not meet in February.
