AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE: Beginning Level 1

American Sign Language (ASL), the fourth most common language in America, is used by hundreds of thousands of Deaf individuals and hearing people in the Deaf community. Students will have hands-on fun learning the fundamentals of ASL, including vocabulary building, receptive/expressive skills, finger spelling and Deaf culture. The instructor, Charlie McKellar, is a graduate of Gallaudet University in 2001 with a MA in ASL Linguistics.

GERMAN: BEGINNING

Learn to speak, read, and write the German language, with an emphasis on conversation. In a highly effective and relaxed atmosphere, students engage in lively and productive conversation practice. Basic grammar is fully explained. Students learn about the rich culture of Germanic countries and even sing a German beer-drinking song! The instructor lived and studied in Germany through Stanford, from where she later got a Master’s Degree. This course is ideal for those wanting basic communication skills for use with friends and relatives and/or for business, travel, and everyday purposes. A textbook with accompanying CD’s, Learn German in 10 Minutes a Day, is available for purchase at the Adult School ($50). Please note: spring quarter classes meet twice a week.

Parliamo solo italiano! This class will help you master the Italian language through review of higher level grammar with emphasis on speaking, reading and writing. The class is based on interactive participation as students read, discuss, translate and comment on literature and written assignments mainly found in the required textbook, La pagina breve, available in the Adult School office for an additional fee. Handouts will be given in class, the course is conducted entirely in Italian, and some homework is required each class time.

This is an introductory course in situational Japanese. Students will grasp just what kind of language Japanese is while learning basic conversation patterns. Emphasis is on the spoken language, but reading and writing of characters will be taught. Learn to speak simple and correct Japanese while gaining insight into this fascinating culture. The required textbook, Japanese for Busy People I (revised 3rd edition), is available in the Adult School office.

This class is for students who know the basics of Spanish grammar and have active vocabularies of 2,000 words. The course presents new grammatical structures and stresses the Spanish subjunctive. Students develop speaking, listening and reading skills by discussing short works of contemporary Spanish/Latin-American literature. Two textbooks are available in the Adult Scbool office.

ADVANCED SPANISH CONVERSATION AND LITERATURE

Prerequisite: Advanced Spanish skills
Students converse only in Spanish and read contemporary Spanish/Latin-American plays, novels and short stories. Group discussion increases vocabulary and awareness of the Spanish-speaking world. Repetition of the course is encouraged, as new literature is introduced each quarter. A textbook is available in the Adult Scbool office.
