FOREIGN LANGUAGES

 

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE: Beginning Level 1

Instructor: Charlie McKellar ( cdmckellar@hotmail.com )

American Sign Language (ASL), the fourth most common language in America, is used by hundreds of thousands of Deaf individuals and hearing people in the Deaf community. Students will have hands-on fun learning the fundamentals of ASL, including vocabulary building, receptive/expressive skills, finger spelling and Deaf culture. The instructor, Charlie McKellar, is a graduate of Gallaudet University in 2001 with a MA in ASL Linguistics.

FRENCH: Beginning (First quarter)

Bonjour! In this class students will learn phonetics and pronunciation, reading and grammar. The course content is designed to build up skills in spoken communication by teaching the vocabulary used in everyday situations. Students will become familiar with different aspects of French culture. Required textbook DŽcouverte et CrŽation (approximately $100) is available at the Adult School office.

C’est une belle langue! This course is designed to teach pronunciation and phonetics and develop vocabulary and grammatical rules necessary in mastering the basic skills needed in everyday conversation. Prerequisite: 3 or 4 quarters of French

Nous aimons le franais! Students with previous course work in French will be able to enhance communication skills, learn grammar and syntax, develop vocabulary and improve oral comprehension and conversation through well designed course contents. Boost your mastery of French in this class focused on conversation. We will talk about culture, current events, literature and much more using a variety of media (newspapers, magazines, audio and videotapes). Improve your skills in grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading and writing. Instructor is a native French speaker.

GERMAN: BEGINNING

Instructor: Claudia Lee

Learn to speak, read, and write the German language, with an emphasis on conversation. In a highly effective and relaxed atmosphere, students engage in lively and productive conversation practice. Basic grammar is fully explained. Students learn about the rich culture of Germanic countries and even sing a German beer-drinking song! The instructor lived and studied in Germany through Stanford, from where she later got a Master’s Degree. This course is ideal for those wanting basic communication skills for use with friends and relatives and/or for business, travel, and everyday purposes. A textbook with accompanying CD’s, Learn German in 10 Minutes a Day, is available for purchase at the Adult School ($50). Please note: spring quarter classes meet twice a week.

ITALIAN: Level I

Buon giorno! Students will learn the foundation of the Italian language with correct pronunciation, basic grammar and vocabulary through use of simple dialogue and phrases, readings, and written and oral exercises. Special readings emphasize important cultural aspects of Italy (geography, history, customs). Homework assignments will be given. The textbook, Studio italiano, is required and available in the Adult School office. No class May 26.

Students will gain confidence in reading, writing and speaking through increasingly complex practice and exercises, as well as continue their learning of Italian life and culture. Parliamo solo italiano! This class will help you master the Italian language through review of higher level grammar with emphasis on speaking, reading and writing. The class is based on interactive participation as students read, discuss, translate and comment on literature and written assignments mainly found in the required textbook, La pagina breve, available in the Adult School office for an additional fee. Handouts will be given in class, the course is conducted entirely in Italian, and some homework is required each class time.

JAPANESE: Beginning I (Third quarter; lessons 11–15)

Prerequisites: Two quarters of Beginning I Japanese and understanding of kana reading

This is an introductory course in situational Japanese. Students will grasp just what kind of language Japanese is while learning basic conversation patterns. Emphasis is on the spoken language, but reading and writing of characters will be taught. Learn to speak simple and correct Japanese while gaining insight into this fascinating culture. The required textbook, Japanese for Busy People I (revised 3rd edition), is available in the Adult School office.

JAPANESE: Intermediate (Second quarter, beginning with lesson 6)

Prerequisites: Understanding of lessons 1–5 of Japanese for Busy People II and kana reading/writing

This class continues from the basics learned in Japanese for Busy People Book I. Students will improve their communication skills, build their grammar and vocabulary, and start writing kanji. The goal of the class is for students to acquire working knowledge of the spoken language in everyday life and to learn more about Japanese culture. The required textbook, Japanese for Busy People II (revised 3rd edition), is available in the Adult School office.

Prerequisite: Three quarters of Beginning Spanish or equivalent

Continue studying Spanish with this yearlong course that focuses on conversational skills. The instructor incorporates the grammar and cultural information of the contemporary Hispanic world. Two required textbooks, Spanish for Communication and Review Text in Spanish Two Years, may be purchased at the Adult School office.

SPANISH: High Intermediate Conversation (Third and fourth quarters)

Prerequisite: Beginning and Low Intermediate Spanish (six quarters or equivalent)

This class is for students who know the basics of Spanish grammar and have active vocabularies of 2,000 words. The course presents new grammatical structures and stresses the Spanish subjunctive. Students develop speaking, listening and reading skills by discussing short works of contemporary Spanish/Latin-American literature. Two textbooks are available in the Adult Scbool office.

ADVANCED SPANISH CONVERSATION AND LITERATURE

Instructor: Graciela McCord

Prerequisite: Advanced Spanish skills

Students converse only in Spanish and read contemporary Spanish/Latin-American plays, novels and short stories. Group discussion increases vocabulary and awareness of the Spanish-speaking world. Repetition of the course is encouraged, as new literature is introduced each quarter. A textbook is available in the Adult Scbool office.
