ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

Online registration is not available for these classes. You must take the placement test given on Mondays.

All classes teach listening, speaking, reading and writing with a focus on learning to communicate better at work and in the community.

CLASSES ARE FREE. BEGIN ANY TIME IN THE YEAR.

WALK-IN TESTING SCHEDULE FOR NEW ESL STUDENTS

All students new to Palo Alto Adult School must take a placement test before attending the free classes listed in this section. The test takes approximately two hours. Please bring your address, phone number and a pencil. There is no childcare available during the test. Returning students may re-enter class by speaking with the placement tester.

TESTING FOR DAY CLASSES

Where: Cubberley Community Center,  4000 Middlefield Rd., Room A-3

Time: 9 a.m.—Students arriving late must come another day.

Dates: Mondays: March 31–July 21, 2008

No testing March 24, May 26 and June 9, 2008

TESTING FOR EVENING CLASSES

Where: Palo Alto High School, 50 Embarcadero Road (March 31–June 2: Room 218; June 16–July 21: Room 302)

Time: 6:30 p.m.—Students arriving late must come another night.

INGLéS COMO SEGUNDO LENGUAJE

Ofrecemos cursos de ingles como segundo lenguaje por la ma–ana y por la tarde. Por la ma–ana las clases se ofrecen en el Centro Comunitario de Cubberley, en Middlefield Rd. en Palo Alto. Por la tarde, las clases se ofrecen en la escuela secundaria de Palo Alto (Palo Alto High School), en la esquina de las calles Embarcadero y El Camino Real. Para matricularse en los cursos de ingles usted necesitara presentar el examen de ingreso, que se da todos los lunes que no sean d’as de fiesta. Las clases son gratis.

COMMUNITY-BASED ENGLISH TUTORING: Study at Home

Palo Alto Adult School and the Barron Park Elementary School offer a class for parents who want to learn English and who want to help their children with school. Students watch videos and study at home. They meet once a week with a teacher for 30 minutes. For more information, please call the teacher at (650) 324-8986. Se habla espa–ol.

La escuela de adultos de Palo Alto y la esceula primaria Barron Park ofrecen las clases para los padres que desean aprender ingles y que desean ayudar a sus ni–os con la escuela. Learn ESL listening, reading and writing skills in the computer lab. Learn English vocabulary while you learn computer skills. Learn to follow directions in English. In this fun beginning class we will use the mouse, get on the Internet, send and receive e-mail, and make and print a flyer.

Learn ESL listening, reading and writing skills in the computer lab. Learn English vocabulary while you learn computer skills. Learn to follow directions in English. Learn more about the basics of using a computer. Attach files to email, make and save files, and use the Windows and Mac filing systems.

ESL VOCATIONAL: INTRODUCTION TO WORD PROCESSING

Prerequisite: ESL Say Hello to the Computer Level 2 or similar experience and enrollment in a Palo Alto Adult School intermediate or advanced ESL class

Improve your English writing skills while you learn to use Microsoft Word to write a letter, make a handout, and create a resume. Learn English vocabulary and practice your listening skills. Have fun changing the way your documents look. Learn to save and print.

ESL VOCATIONAL: INTRODUCTION TO MS OFFICE SKILLS

Instructor: Nilou Shokrani

Prerequisite: ESL Say Hello to the Computer Level 2 or similar experience and enrollment in a Palo Alto Adult School ESL class

Learn the basics of three Microsoft Officeprograms. Learn more English vocabulary. Improve your English writing skills while you learn to use Microsoft Word to write a letter and make a handout. Practice your listening skills while you use Excel to organize information in a worksheet and make a budget. And improve your reading while you use PowerPoint to turn your digital photos into a slide show.

BE A VOLUNTEER TUTOR

Help someone learn English.

Set aside two hours a week to help wonderful people at a crucial moment in their lives. Learn about other cultures, learn about your own language, and feel good about what you’re doing. You can work one-on-one with a student or you can work with a teacher in a classroom. You do not have to speak a foreign language or have teaching experience. The tutoring program provides free training and ongoing support.
