These classes are offered for advanced level non-native speakers, those who have tested above our state-supported program or who wish to focus on one specific area of English. It is not necessary to take the placement test before enrolling in these classes. Please see the ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE section for free state-supported classes.
FOCUS ON ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION

Prerequisite: High Intermediate ESL vocabulary and grammar skills.
This practical approach to American English pronunciation focuses on stress, rhythm and intonation. We also emphasize the contrast between clear and reduced sounds in North American speech. Students will practice these elements of pronunciation in context. This class is suitable for intermediate and low-advanced non-native speakers. Textbook required for an additional fee is available at the Adult School. Class is limited to 20 students.

ENGLISH GRAMMAR FOR THE ADVANCED ESL STUDENT

Get more comfortable with grammar! You'll improve your speaking and writing skills as we cover tricky points of grammar and increase your understanding of the structure of good English. We'll use exercises from the textbook and natural conversation to practice what you learn. Textbook required for an additional fee is available at the Adult School. Class is limited to 20 students.

TOEFL PREPARATION

Prerequisite: Advanced English skills.
The TOEFL test has been modified, and this newly revised class will help you with high level grammar, test-taking strategies and the new speaking section of the test. You can also get practice taking notes (which is permitted in the listening section of the new test). You will do exercises at home and bring your specific questions to class, making the class custom-made for your needs. Please note that this class does not include online work in the classroom. Information about the exam is available at < www.ets.org/toefl >. Please purchase the required textbook in advance at the Adult School office (approximately $50).
