Increase your keyboard knowledge and speed! This self-paced course provides students with correct keyboarding techniques and typing procedures, and is ideal for individuals who want to refresh and boost their computer skills, as well as those who have never worked on a typewriter or computer keyboard. Ms. Engelman, a California credentialed teacher, has taught computer applications at Palo Alto Adult School since 1998. Please note: there are two sessions of the same level available for this class.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS AND THE INTERNET

Prerequisites: No experience is necessary.

Are you just getting started with computers? Get comfortable using the mouse, get on the Internet, send and receive email, and start typing and editing a document. Students will have hands-on practice with Windows XP on lab PCs. This class provides a foundation for other classes we offer. No class January 19 and February 16.

BUILDING YOUR COMPUTER SKILLS

Prerequisite: Successful completion of our introductory class or equivalent.

Increase your computer skills. You will use the address book, mailing lists and folders in Yahoo mail. You will customize your desktop, find helpful websites, search for information on the internet, and manage files and folders. This is a hands-on class for PC users. There will be a computer for each student to use during class. No class January 19 and February 16.

Master file organization with Windows XP! The course provides you with the basics of Windows XP (and any version of Windows), and will enable you to name, save, and find files; work with folders; and more. Students have hands-on practice on lab PCs. Instructor provides handouts. Suitable for beginners of any age. Confidence in the use of the application Microsoft Word is the entry to word processing and many other applications. Do you know how to use the important items on the drop-down menus? Are you confused by file management? Can you combine pictures with text? Do you know how to use tabs and indents, page breaks? This course teaches how to make the most of selected skills.

Excel is a program with many practical uses: tracking your stocks and mutual funds, keeping records of household and personal information, maintaining your address book effortlessly, and creating links to the Internet. Starting with the basic ideas in Excel, we will cover the formatting of cells, several special functions along with text boxes, colorful charts and graphics. Finally, the links to other Microsoft Office products and the Internet will be used. We will use Microsoft Excel 2003.

You will learn how to keep your computer up to date with software from Microsoft. You will be able to uninstall programs you no longer use, delete unnecessary files and improve the performance of your computer. You will also learn about virus protection, how to create screen savers and customize your computer. This course is for people who use Windows XP, but the topics covered can apply to Vista as well.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY FOR PC USERS: Beginning Photoshop Elements

Prerequisites: Access to a digital camera, basic computer skills.

Learn how to get started in the exciting world of digital photography. Topics include: basics of digital photos, transferring photos to your computer, organizing photos using iPhoto, photo editing in Photoshop Elements, making prints and sharing photos over the Internet. Class is taught in a PC lab. Miles Smith, a former graphic designer and art director for 15 years, has been teaching desktop publishing, including digital imaging and photography, at the post-secondary level since 1995.

Excel is more than a spreadsheet-use it as a database for organizing large quantities of information, use it to print labels for your cards or mailings, or as a tool to balance your checkbook! Learn the fundamentals of this powerful spreadsheet: formatting, printing, charting/graphs, and built-in functions. Learn QuickBooks Pro 2008 accounting software to manage your business or develop new job skills. Class covers basic accounting principles and practical bookkeeping methods with hands-on computer lab experience. BROWSING THE INTERNET -- PC and MAC

There is so much information available on the web. How do you find it? What web browser do you use? In this class for both PC and Mac computer users, we will use several web browsers-Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome and Internet Explorer. You will be able to find information about health, entertainment, shopping, and travel. You will also learn how to stay safe and secure (prevent identity theft) when using the Internet. This class is for students using either a PC or a Mac and will be taught in the PC Lab.

MEET THE MAC: LEVEL 2 (ALL VERSIONS OF OS X)

We will review how to use Mac OS X versions X.2, X.3 and X.4 including word processing and some graphics. You will learn more advanced features of OS X including System Preferences, an overview of iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie and iDVD; Apple's .Mac ("dot-mac") services; iCal; Address Book; and basic Internet using Apple's Safari browser, Mail and iChatAV. The course will also cover basic troubleshooting techniques and programs. For Mac users only.

Have you wanted to use iTunes and iChat, but just haven't found the time? Organize and listen to music, radio programs, audiobooks, TV shows, and movies in iTunes or on your iPod. Add music to an iPhoto slide show and make free voice or videophone calls with iChat. (Bringing a music player with a cable to class is helpful but not necessary.)

It's time to be entertained and get creative! Organize and listen to music, radio programs, audiobooks, TV shows and movies in iTunes or on your iPod. Use Apple's iPhoto for organizing and basic editing of your photos. View your photos in a musical slide show and share them with others. (Bringing a music player and digital camera with their cables to class is helpful, but not necessary.)
