Computer Skills - Avenidas

PALO ALTO ADULT SCHOOL/AVENIDAS COMPUTER CLASSES
The following daytime classes are offered through a partnership between the Palo Alto Adult School and Avenidas Lifelong Learning and are designed for people over 50.
A discount is provided to Avenidas members. All classes are held at Avenidas, 450 Bryant Street, in Downtown Palo Alto. Convenient free three-hour city parking is available in the parking garage across the street from Avenidas on Bryant Street. As a courtesy to other students, you are strongly encouraged to arrive on time. Some classes are held twice a week for four weeks while others are held once a week for eight weeks.

PC Classes

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS AND THE INTERNET

Prerequisites: No experience is necessary.

Are you just getting started with computers? Get comfortable powering up and shutting down the computer, and using the keyboard and mouse. Get started on the Internet and send and receive basic email. This class meets twice a week for four weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

BUILDING YOUR COMPUTER SKILLS

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Introduction to Computers and the Internet or equivalent experience is recommended.

Further develop your computer skills using the address book, mailing lists and folders in email. You will customize your desktop, find helpful websites, search for information on the Internet, and begin file and folder management. This class will use of Windows 7. No class on January 16 and February 20.

WORKING WITH FILES AND FOLDERS

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Building Your Computer Skills or equivalent experience is recommended.

Building on skills you learned in Intro to the PC and Building your Computer Skills, you will use files of different types, organize your folders so that you can easily find documents and work with images and text files using basic editing programs. You will then be prepared to take our more advanced courses. No class on January 16 and February 20.

CARE AND FEEDING OF YOUR PC

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Working with Files and Folders or equivalent experience is recommended.

Keep your computer software, including antivirus programs, up-to-date. You will be able to configure your desktop and improve the performance of your computer. This class is for users of XP, Vista and Windows 7.

THE TWENTY MOST USEFUL SKILLS IN MICROSOFT WORD

Prerequisite: Successful completion of “Working with Files and Folders” or equivalent experience is recommended.

Confidence in the use of Microsoft Word is the key to word processing and many other applications. This course teaches how to make the most of selected skills. For example, do you know how to use the important items on the drop-down menus or banners, are you confused by file management? Can you combine pictures with text or how to use tabs and indents, page breaks? This class is suitable for PC users with Microsoft Word 2003 or later.

SHARPENING YOUR INTERNET SKILLS

There is so much information available on the web. How do you find it? What web browser should you use? From select-ing a broadband vendor to surfing the Web, this class will help you be confident using the Internet. Communicate with friends and family using email in a relaxed environment as-sisted by our staff.

DROP IN PC LAB WITH TUTORS TO HELP

Intro to MacAre you just getting started with computers and will use a Mac? Get comfortable powering up and shutting down the computer, and using the keyboard and mouse. We'll explore the Internet with emphasis on searching for information with Google and using email.

Further develop your Mac skills with an introduction to some popular Apple applications including Address Book, Dashboard and iPhoto. Copy and save info from Safari; and continue developing your communication skills with email attachments, organizing email and an introduction to Skype. Do a software update and customize your Dock. This class is held twice a week for four weeks on Mondays and Wednesdays. No class on January 16.

DISCOVERING MAC TOOLS

Successful completion of Building Your Mac Skills or equivalent experience is recommended.

Use helpful Mac tools including Photo Booth, iTunes, Spotlight, Grab, Time Machine and System Preferences while expanding your skills with iPhoto, Safari, and file and folder management. Areas of student interest will be included. This class is held twice a week for four weeks on Mondays and Wednesdays. No class on February 20.
